The following is aimed at new(ish) players looking to find a little more information about various ships from events, for premium currency or for real-world cash.  The goal is to allow players to make an educated decision before parting with their time and money and to find premium vessels that suit their chosen style of play, whether that is competitive, cooperative, or simply for fun.  The idea here is to elabourate on information not commonly available through reading statistics and provide some (heavily) biased anecdotal evidence to encourage or dissuade you from making your purchase.  The usual disclaimers apply:  everyone knows the Matchmaker clearly loves me because I spend money so that's why I occasionally get really good games, not because I have any particular skills of note.

Without further ado:

The Republic of China Navy Benson-class Destroyer

Lo Yang

Quick Summary:   A modified Benson-class Destroyer (the USS Benson, in fact) that can swap it's Engine Boost / Defensive Fire ability for a Hydroacoustic Search instead.  The Lo Yang has slightly less HP than the Benson while also having the option of two different torpedo armaments.

Cost:   Sold in bundles, starting at $49.99 USD for the ship, a port slot, 7 days premium time and 2000 doubloons.

PROs

  • Has the option of two different torpedo types -- one longer ranged, the other harder hitting and faster but with a shorter reach.
  • Has the option of using a Hydroacoustic Search consumable.
  • Very high rate of fire at 18rpm stock from her four guns.
  • Excellent turret rotation speed of nearly 34' per second.
  • Surprisingly good AA potential for a Destroyer
  • Excellent rudder shift time at 2.7s stock & small turning circle at 570m.
  • Can stealth-fire from open water at 10.3km with the proper module selection, even with a novice Captain.

CONs

  • Almost identical to the researched USN Benson-class (C-Hull) Destroyer
  • Guns are unmodified USN 127mm dual-purpose guns with horrible shell flight trajectories.
  • Shells have only a 5% chance to set targets ablaze and low hitting power.
  • Second set of torpedoes only have a 6km range, making them unable to fire effectively from stealth.
  • Does not have the increased Free-XP bonus found on the Anshan.
  • Expensive -- costs the same as 3 months worth of Premium Time.

Not just a Benson-class Destroyer, she is the Benson-class Destroyer.  The lead of her class, sold to the Republic of China and renamed, it shouldn't come to anyone's surprise that she is very similar (almost identical) to the tech-tree version of the Benson-class Destroyer for the United States Navy.  There are minor differences, however.

The Full Review

Would I recommend?   If you want a $50 USD premium version of the Benson-class Destroyer (C-Hull), sure.  She's a great ship.
Just be aware of her shortcomings.  She cannot be used as a trainer for your USN Captains.  Her torpedoes are not as good.  If you're clear on these two points and the thought of this ship still appeals, go for it.

Recommended Modules:  As a potential Destroyer Escort / Destroyer Hunter, this gives you the option of a few different equipment layouts to maximize your options.

  • For your first slot, Main Battery Modification 1 is arguably your best choice.  This keeps your guns in the game and your ship less explody.  Which is nice.
  • For your second slot, you have a couple of options.  If you're intending to focus as a gunship, Gun Fire Control System Modification 1 is your best option to reduce the dispersion of her guns.  If you intend to play as a Destroyer Escort, you may want to consider AA Gun Battery Modification 2 to increase the range of your flak umbrella.
  • For your third slot, Propulsion Modification 1 is the best choice.  An immobilized Destroyer is a dead Destroyer.  Note that with the Captain Skill changes in 0.5.3 this is less of an imperative with the ease at which Last Stand is available.
  • For your fourth slot, Steering Gear Modification 2 will reduce your rudder shift time from 2.7s down to 2.1s (we're just getting silly at this stage).
  • And for your fifth slot, you again have two choices depending on your role.  For a dedicated Destroyer Escort, Target Acquisition System Modification 1 is valuable to increase your detection range of incoming torpedoes to alert the capital ships behind you. For any other role, Concealment System Modification 1 is better to reduce your surface detection down to 6.6km and allowing you to stealth fire from the surface at 10.3km.

Recommended Consumables:   As with all Destroyers, I strongly recommend using the premium version of the Damage Control Party consumable -- especially if you intend to be up front and knife fighting in a competitive environment.  This will reduce your reset timer on this consumable to 40s (from 60s).  Keep in mind that the premium versions of the other consumables will add an additional charge to their total, which can be invaluable for Smoke Generators, in addition to reducing their reset timer.

While Defensive Fire is obviously necessary for anti-aircraft roles, Hydroacoustic Search becomes a viable (and desirable) option in two situations.  The first is when you want to operate in an anti-destroyer capacity for your big ships, screening them from Hail-Mary torpedo strikes from enemy DDs.  It also has currency when playing in competitive environments like Ranked Battles where you can easily anticipate a close-range knife fight with other destroyers in almost every match played.  Otherwise, Engine Boost 1 has the most utility for most players.

Recommended Captain Skills:

Thankfully there is a lot of overlap between anti-aircraft and standard gunship roles for Destroyer Captains.

  • From tier 1, in 99% of the cases you will want Situational Awareness as your first choice.
  • From tier 2, Last Stand is an imperative for most Destroyers.  This will allow the Lo Yang to still make 30 knots even with her engine knocked out.
  • From tier 3, Superintendent is the best choice, giving you an additional charge from your Smoke Generators, but also for whatever you select as your 3rd consumable.
  • From tier 4, Advanced Fire Training is best.  It improves your AA umbrella for one but also the range of your main batteries, increasing your stealth-fire window.  This said, Demolition Expert is preferred for gunship Captains where the 11.6km range of the Lo Yang is considered sufficient.  For anti-Destroyer work, don't discount Survivability Expert for the additional HP which cap tip the scales in a DPM race against Soviet Destroyers.
  • From tier 5, Concealment Expert is most desirable, dropping your surface detection range to 6.0km in combination with other modules and camouflage.  This is often skipped by Destroyer Escorts looking to maximize their AA power, however.

Through your next pass, I would strongly recommend investing in Basic Fire Training to increase her rate of fire up to 19.8rpm.  In addition, this also increases her AA potency and should be the first skill grabbed after Advanced Fire Training by dedicated Destroyer Escorts.  Manual Fire Control for AA Armament should be next on the list for Destroyer Escorts, with the points left over put into Vigilance to increase the range at which she picks up torpedoes to give more time for her big friends to get out of the way.

Awwww, I didn't get a cameo :(

Although, I'd like to point out a small error; doesn't the C hull Benson get 20rpm stock?

I tried to find a good screenshot but you were 6km away when you esploded.  :(

And good question about the C-Hull.  Let's take a look.  I have the B-Hull unlocked on my Benson-class and I wasn't intending on researching the C for obvious reasons.  I merely click highlighted it when making my comparisons (I was shocked at how few there were).

You are correct.  It bumps up to 20rpm.  I'll make the edit.  Thanks for catching that.

I was about to ask a dumb question, then I realized what I was doing and stopped.

Good to know the capabilities of that new ship. I bet she's fun. Once I figured out how to Benson, I went from hating that thing, to daggon near worshiping it.

Wouldn't Survivability Expert at T4 be a viable option for a destroyer hunter killer role? The 400*8 presents 3200 HP for the Lo Yang, which is a lot when engaging in knife fights with other destroyers.

Last Lo Yang I went after ducked into a cloud, but some kind of glitch. I was only within 10 km in my Mogami and he was still visible half the time. Bugs with the stealth portion? Pointing out because it affects invisifiring.

Always down for helping anyone learn. Hands-on guy, so I'll division with ya and observe how you're handling your ship. Click orange contacts button, use search bar for player's name, and right-click to add.

Damn stealthy Kiev :(

I personally got the C hull because it was mandatory. However, I'd still acquire the C hull. IIRC, the C hull is the only configuration that allowed you to use Defensive Fire (when it came out). I still would choose to have the C hull just for that reason.

There is nothing more annoying that a scout plane or a dive bomber squadron. I use the Defensive Fire to rid myself of those problems (I'm guessing you've thought of this, as you are no fool). Yet you may say, "CVs hardly exist, there's no reason to have it." My reply is, "Almost all ships at this tier have a floatplane." The C hull allows you to remove the number one enemy of destroyers.

You may want to save your XP for the Fletcher, but the investment of a Defensive Fire consumable allows you to gain more xp per battle, as the thing that was killing you is destroyed. The C hull's investment quickly earns itself back.

Once again, great review as always LWM!  I want the Lo Yang, but not $50 worth of want.  Oh well, can still have fun in my Blys.

Hmmm...I was considering buying it, but after this review I think I'll pass.  I already have a Benson that I like quite a lot.  Why do I need another one?

Good write up, I would agree that it is accurate. Thought as someone pointed out earlier I believe Tier 4 Survivability Expert is the better option than Advanced Fire Training. You already have decent blind fire distance, especially when you get a 15 point commander. Both can be considered viable options, I would at least mention it. That extra bit of HP really makes is a brawler against other ships such as the Udaloi and what not.

As someone who owns it as well, if you are thinking about getting it I would just say this: if you are someone who doesn't play a lot of the DD trees and would like to try it at a higher level, go for it. If you are reasonably close to getting the Benson from the US tree, save your money. Either way at some point you will have a fun ship to play, though the premium Tier 8 is one heck of a money maker.
