Hey all!

I keep hearing that HMCS Haida should be added to the game. I'm curious how large the general interest in this ship is.

So, if you could please:

  • Tell me why you want this ship
  • Tell me if you think it's worth adding to Commonwealth tree, since I personally don't know if a Canadian line is viable at this time but it's fun to imagine
  • Tier Thoughts?
  • General thoughts?

Bonus question

  • Should I have gone with Dove_of_War instead, and gone for the irony?

You should've gone with Seagull_of_War, to compete with Steven

As for Haida, she should probably be a Tier 6 or 5 destroyer. That's all I can guess atm

you should have gone with Dove_of_war becuase irony is the best. As for the HMCS Haida tier five or six should work for a Trible class ship mabey with  a fast torp rearm

1) She is like the Enterprise for Canadians. She - to this day - is Canada's most decorated Warship; and dare I say the pride of the Royal Canadian Navy and canuck naval enthusiasts everywhere. She's also a Museum Ship to boot (as the last of the Tribals) !

2) I definitely think she deserves a place in the Commonwealth line. I don't expect there to be enough ships for a Canadian branch as the RCN used US and British supplied gear. But like the Perth, she is a significant ship and could be a deserved one-off.

3) It really depends on where the Tribal-class will be eventually positioned, but I think the destroyer that is most akin to the Tribal in-game is the Błys, and as such, should match her as a Tier7 ship.

4) plzplzplzplzplzplzplzplzplzplz. i'll liek luv you lotz. mak da canadians heppie. don't let War Thunder beat you to the punch :)

- you could play around and see whether you want her to be in her WW2 config or her post-war config; either would be fine to see.

- The post-war refit is interesting, as she is armed with the guns seen on the black swan; derpy but very fast firing (british akizuki?) Also it would mean her #3 gun is more like a secondary armament.

- torpedo reload is something i'd like to see on her considering she has only one torpedo launcher

- maybe continue with the british single-shot torp system?

5) I like Pigeon_of_War. the derpyness is well endeared. Plus I imagine you as a Pigeon as is so don't ruin the illusion for me.

  • It's one of the few surviving British or Commonwealth ships.  North America has quite a few museum ships, but most of them were United States Navy vessels, as the vast majority of British and Commonwealth ships were scrapped.
  • Commonwealth tree is fine.
  • Probably tier 7, depending on what you plan on doing with the normal Tribals, and how you choose to balance them.  Honestly, many of the tier 7-10 destroyers in this game vary much more in in-game power (rate of fire, shell damage, fire chance, accuracy, etc.) than they do in real-life ship specifications.
  • It's a Tribal, which you're going to need to model anyway.  Having a British destroyer tree without including the Tribals would be daft.  You might as well get another premium, likely a popular one, out of the effort.

HMCS Haida fits at T7 with Blyskawica, folks. That is all this Canadian who knows her combat record has to say about it.

Answers:

Why:  History, collection, expand the Commonwealth line with a DD to help out with the Perth.

Commonwealth:  Yes.  The Canadian line would be rather sparse, as would the Commonwealth line.  This gives many more choices.

Tier:  We are lacking in Tier 8 Premium DDs.  We have the Lo Yang, but it's alone there.

General Thoughts:  The Perth brought forth a whole unique fighting style with the smoke.  It would be interesting to see something on a similar pattern - or even the same thing on a DD.

...  During the war, the allies used strips of foil to jam radar...  add that to the Haida smoke?

So much has been lost, so much forgotten. So much pain, so much blood. And for what? I wonder. The past tempts us, the present confuses us, and the future frightens us. And our lives slip away, moment by moment, lost in that vast, terrible in-between. But there is still time to seize that one last, fragile moment. To choose something better, to make a difference.  -- Babylon 5

  • I've read and heard a lot of stories regarding her and her accomplishments is one of the legendary ships the RCN had. Plus she sits 5 minutes from my apartment!
  • She's worth adding to the Commonwealth line. I don't think a full Canadian line is viable.
  • I would say Tier 7.
  • She would be a great starter for upcoming RN DD line. Sure she won't be a captain trainer but she could potentially let players experience what the RN line would look like.

"Ah, it's natural consequence with me, Ashigara! A great victory!"

Canadians will love you long time! Teir 6-7 would be best in my opinion and it would allow ranked play and generally fit smoothly. A WG video of its history would also be in order as is a museum!

Why I want - Because she's a cool ship and I want more Commonwealth stuff.

Yeah, put it in the Commonwealth tree, I'm 99% sure that a Canadian line is not viable.

Tier 6, like HMS Gallant.

Dove of War is funny, but I think you have to go with Seagull of War.

T1-3: Erie, Smith, Derski, G-101, Katori, St. Louis, Bogatyr, Friant, South Carolina

T4-6: Izyaslav, Clemson, Danae, Yūbari, Kaiser, Kamikaze, Königsberg, Omaha, Kongo, Bogue, Duca D'Aosta, Cleveland, Aoba, Perth, Ryujo

T7-9: Shiratsuyu, Sims, Mahan, Atlanta, Belfast (gift from YureiKuma), Ranger, Saipan, New Orleans, North Carolina, Alabama, Lexington, Iowa, Missouri

GoalsIJN: Hiryu, Mogami - USN: Benson, Baltimore, Essex - KMS: T-22, Gneisenau - HMS: Leander, Fiji - VMF: Podvoisky, Budyonny - MN: Duguay-Trouin, La Galissonnière

Why: The Haida is Canada's version of the USS Enterprise; most decorated Canadian warship left afloat, last Tribal-class destroyer in one piece and what better way to celebrate Canada being (over) 150 years old by the time she gets released? Also, Haida is the one ship I would not hesitate to open my wallet for. ;P

Commonwealth Tree?: Definitely. There won't be enough ships to make a Canadian tree unless you add Frigates as a playable class, and a Commonwealth branch to the RN tree could be interesting in it's own right.

Tier: Somewhere between tier 5 and 8. It depends on where you want to put the Tribal class on the RN line.

General Thoughts: What I've said and what others can say in favour of adding her. *Shrugs*

Here we go!

As a Canadian, it's pretty obvious why I would like HMCS Haida in World Of Warships. As the only remaining Tribal class destroyer in the world and the most decorated ship in the history of the Royal Canadian Navy, she seems to be an easy choice for a premium ship, with her being a museum ship with relatively easy access to her specifications. Haida also served with Blyskawica, the Polish Tier 7 destroyer we currently already have in WOWS, making for a nice reunion, as they are both museum ships. I have a few other facts too which contribute to why I want her added.

- She served through WWII and Korea with very good luck.

- Haida partially earned the title of ‘Fightingest ship in the Royal Canadian Navy" due to her sinking the most tonnage of any Canadian war ship in history.

- Her kill list includes, T29, T27, ZH1, Z32, U971, UJ1420 or UJ1421, M486 Minesweeper, SG3C and a Patrol Boat. While some of these were kill assists, her total tonnage sunk comes out to roughly 8,600 tons which was more than three times her weight!

- Fought close quarters night battles alongside her Polish and British comrades against German destroyers and torpedo boats around the coast of France in 1944, helping clear the way for D-Day.

- Haida and two of her sister Tribal's, Iroquois and Huron, were both present when Scharnhorst attempted to intercept convoy JW-55B. These destroyers were attached to the escort of the convoy and if the British hunting squadron would not have intercepted Scharnhorst, it was likely that the Canadian and British destroyers escorting the convoy would have clashed. Even so, German aircraft and subs attacked the convoy however, no ships were lost and the convoy successfully reached her destination.

Haida in 1945, wearing a standard camouflage pattern.

-  She was part of the prestigious Trainbuster Club was mostly dominated by individual Canadian destroyers and admission was not easy at all. The club was formed in the Korean War when American and Canadian destroyers were hunting North Korean trains. You had to wait off shore for hours, braving coastal batteries. The engine car of the train had to knocked out or the kill was not counted and even then, kills were very carefully monitored. HMCS Crusader has the highest kill record with four trains, three of them within a 24 hour window. Overall, Haida, Athabaskan (II) and Crusader accounted for 8 of the 28 total UN train kills of the war.

As for the WOWS performance of Haida, she is an alright ship from what I can gather and she would fit very well at Tier 7 as a Commonwealth premium!

- Relatively high HP pool, only less than Leberecht Maass

- Forward facing dual 4.7 inch gun turrets

- Similar gun performance to US Navy destroyers except for her turret rotation speeds

- Average speed of 36.5 knots

- Lackluster torpedo armament of one quadruple launcher (Torpedo reload consumable?)

- Good close range AA and a dual purpose 4 inch (secondary gun too!)

- Similar concealment to Blyskawica (similar size)

- Very unique camouflage pattern!

This is the pattern I would like Haida to see, the quality is not great as photos of Haida in WWII are extremely rare, here is the same pattern in a model.

Anyway, I appreciate the post and I hope to have convinced you a bit haha!

I prefer Pigeon, much more intimidating :teethhappy:

But... at the end of the war Canada had the 4th largest navy in the world. The Canuckdans deserve their own tech tree.

Why add Haida to the game? Because it's the embodiment of everything the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) did during WWII. The RCN grew from 6 ships when it entered the war in September 1939 to become the world's 3rd largest navy. Canadian sailors were tasked with the perilous journey of escorting merchant ships across the Atlantic. Facing both the U-boat menace and the horrifying conditions that is the North Atlantic, Canadians made an immense contribution to the war effort in order to keep Britain alive while Germany tried to choke her to death.

***As an aside, I highly recommend anyone interested in the Canadian contribution to WWII read Tim Cook's The Necessary War to understand just how terrible the conditions were for Canadian sailors, and just how much we actually contributed in spite of what American or British sources claim.***

Haida herself is also the only surviving Tribal class Destroyer, which in my opinion is one of the finest line of destroyers ever made. I have no doubt that the Tribal Class would have to appear in a full British Destroyer line anyway, so I don't see why adding her as a premium wouldn't be beneficial from a financial standpoint. From a Canadian standpoint, it's the most recognizable ship in our history and would appeal to those of us who play the game.

For tier, considering she served in the same unit as Błyskawica (10th Destroyer Flotilla), I would argue that she should be tier VII. Judging by her armament I don't see why it wouldn't be any more than -1/+1 tier from VII at the very most. Putting her in the commonwealth would be fine (considering how nearly all of our ships were based off of British designs), but I would also love it if Harry DeWolf was her admiral by default! :)

America has over fifty ships in her tech tree, including a dozen or so premiums. All I plea is that you give the Canadians one ship.

Everything that I would say has been said already.
I've been to her in Hamilton, and she's in rough shape... We need to raise awareness for her preservation and potentially get some restoration money towards her!

Agreed! HMCS Sackville seems to do doing quite well and since she's such a small ship along with being in the public eye on the Halifax harbour-scape, Haida needs some attention!

Throw out a Naval Legends episode too and release her for Canada's 150th Birthday this year!

I want the ship so I can play something that represents my own country, I don't know of any other HMCS ships in the game. The ship is still around to this day, too. It would be neat to be able to play a ship someone can go out and see in person.

Canada's accomplishments in the war are usually tallied up with all the other Commonwealth nations. I don't see why it wouldn't fit in their tree.

I don't know how you guys will balance it, but everyone else seems to think it belongs at tier 7.

As long as the game balance team doesn't mess up with it, I'll be happy to see it in game.

Sure, more irony is always fun.

Mmm Understood, but I presented as an option because It would really make her stand-out from a typical Tribal-class that will one day grace the Brit tech tree.

Think of it as getting the Belfast treatment.
