I'll be going to a conference in Oakland and actually staying on Alameda Island so naturally I'm thinking about visiting CV-21 Hornet.  My question is, how long should I plan for a thorough visit?  I'm more interested in the ship herself and so the docent tours are what I'd mostly like, but the website is a bit vague about what's available and how long the various areas take.

I recently took a tour of the hornet and with just me and my aunt (two other guys bailed to to fear of heights) it took about 2 and a half hours for the tour. This does not include wandering the hangar, parking, etc.

It could very well depend on the guide you have but I wouldn't expect anything over 3 hours.

Have not been there but did spend about 4 hrs on the USS Intrepid in New York The busier it is the more time you need, I could have easily spent the whole day wondering round that ship and not seen it all ... enjoyed it
