Watching a replay and the guy had a spotter plane up from his big nasty ship.  The Red Big Nasty was hiding behind an island where the Green guy couldn't see to target him, though his trajectory would have allowed hits.

He switched to the view from his spotter plane which could clearly see the RBN, and so was able to lob shells onto it.

Totally new phenomenon to me.  How is this done?

Spotting planes moves your camera view to a higher elevation, allowing you to look over an island when properly positioned.

Spotting planes do not alter your shells trajectory.

(Above stats not guaranteed accurate. I'm a supertester and test ships don't always register correctly)

Obviously.

The question is, how do I switch to the view from the plane?

^This.

Once you launch the plane your view will change to almost the view out of the cockpit window and will stay that way until the plane returns.

This is not my experience.  My view remains from the bridge.  New targets may show up on the map and mini-map, but no cockpit view.

Hmm.  My last experience was in the 0.6.1 PT; I don't have a ship in the live game that carries planes.  I'm starting to wonder if I was carrying catapult fighters instead of spotters.  Presumably they don't have the same effect?

Zoom in and out with your mouse scroll wheel. The spotter plane affects zoomed in mode.

Thanks, guys,

<sigh>  I gotta get a spotter so I can try this.

I guess there's no way to kluge one up in the training room?

Get a ship with a spotter (not fighter) and head into a training room, there, you've just tested it.

The tier 4 Myogi BB has a spotter. The T5 Kirov CA has a spotter, Those are the earliest spotter planes that I know of in the tech tree.

Shiny.  I have Myogi and am slowly working towards the Kongo. I'm trying to get at least T5 in all cruiser and BB lines and Kongo and Furitaka are the last two left. It seems like a lot of the events want T4-5 or greater, so I've been working on getting them all. I'm up to T4 in all the DDs, but since I'm weaker in them, they are low priority right now.

Qualified for Wyoming but I'm waiting for the sale on Friday.  First sail with Kawachi, aerial torps knocked out the engines leaving me a sitting duck for the DD...  I totally misread the enemy, too, and pushed when I shouldn't have.

The rest of the day has gone pretty much like that.

Spotter planes are particularly effective with American BBs, which have the accuracy to employ them. That said, I'm thinking Tier 8-10. I know the Japanese battleships have questionable accuracy till you get to Nagato.

Also, while spotter plane is great, when you get to upper tiers, a seasoned CV captain can ruin you quickly. When that begins to happen, you'll quickly switch to fighter plane.

Can you switch a catapult fighter plane to a spotter plane.

Just be aware that you will be viewing it from a 3D perspective so you will have to take into account your ship course and speed also. A good reason why most ships with this consumable normally park behind an island before using it. Your range will also increase so lead times will also be longer.
